15 years

15 years it has been since I've last seen your face
The last words you spoke were full of concern
over a friend that you did not approve
The last words I spoke were tumultuous and hurtful

They say you can prepare when you know what is coming
But you never really can

For years I watched my mom struggle
While I stayed silent
My words, they were eating me up inside

I remember that day as if it were yesterday
The friend who came to deliver the message
The man who would not let me leave class
I stood up and walked out
My head held high
I knew what was waiting when I arrived back at the house

I had a choice to stay home, because we knew what was coming
As a teenager my life was already in a whirl
I needed a sense of normalcy
While I waited for what was to come

15 years it has been since I have last seen our face
15 years I have lived with those words inside
I know you left with peace in your heart
15 years it took for that peace to enter mine
